As summer approaches and the weather warms up, you may need to adjust your exercise routine in order to boost your results without sacrificing your safety.
1. Go out in the early morning or late afternoonSunlight is most direct from the late morning to mid afternoon, so schedule your outdoor exercise routine before 10:00 AM or after 3:00 PM to minimize your sun exposure. If you choose to exercise after the sun has set, consider wearing a headlamp so you can better watch your step and alert less-than-focused drivers to your presence.
2. Take coverLeafy trees provide you with a cool, shady environment, but air is also cleaner and more oxygen dense in heavily forested areas. You will exercise—and breathe—more easily.
3. Drink smarterExercising in warm weather dehydrates you more quickly because you lose water as you sweat to maintain optimal body temperature. Make a point to stay well hydrated throughout the day so you don't find yourself guzzling gallons of water during your run. Few things slow your sprint down to a walk like a sloshy stomach.
4. Opt for waterproof sunscreenWhen you’re in the sun, especially direct sunlight, be sure to use sunscreen. The average lotion loses effectiveness when you sweat, so be sure to grab "waterproof" or "sweat resistant" sunscreen that won’t get in your eyes!
5. Mind your headA light, breathable hat will keep the sun out of your eyes and protect your skin from exposure to harmful UV rays. Keep your head cool and you'll be far less likely to overheat.
6. Play harder
Ditch your regular routine altogether and join a sports team that meets once or twice a week. Surrounding yourself with fun-loving, active people will motivate you to work harder and perform better without needing to resort to sheer willpower in the gym.
