Tried one tablet and it powered through (intentional) dried chocolate protein powder and milk. No smell after overnight soak

This worked great on my KODA and I want more of these! When can we have them please?!

I was interested in these as an easy way to clean my protein bottles when camping/backpacking, since it can be annoying (and, in the case of backpacking, totally impractical!) to have to clean them immediately after each use.

I ran a “test” by creating the most disgusting concoction imaginable — I took one of my metal BlenderBottles and one of my plastic BlenderBottles, left a bit of protein/creatine/greens formula combo inside of them, and then let them bake in the June sun on my patio for a week. When I finally took them in, they were nuclear . . . they fizzed when I popped the lids off, the whey had completely separated and congealed, and the smell was noxious. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever smelled a protein bottle so rancid! They were ready.

PROS

I let the EcoBrite tabs sit in each bottle with warm water for 10 minutes. (The instructions say 5-10 or overnight, but I chose 10 minutes since that’s realistically how long I’d allow them to soak.) After the 10 minutes, both bottles had fizzed up as if I had added soap and shook them. The metal BlenderBottle was clean as can be — almost as good as running it through the dishwasher and when I stuck my nose in it and took a whiff, the smell was totally neutralized.

CONS

Now onto the cons . . . although the metal blender bottle base cleaned up great, its plastic lid still had a rancid protein scent to it. Enough that when I went to use it again, I was too put off by the smell to drink from it.

Similarly, the plastic BlenderBottle reeked. It was certainly better than its pre-EcoBrite condition, but bad enough to not want to drink from. The EcoBrite tab had also failed to cut through some of the protein gunk that had stuck to the inside of the lid. No amount of rinsing could get that gunk off, so I had to resort to hand washing it.

My other complaint unrelated to my “test” is that there’s a lot of packaging. For something called “EcoBrite” they come in a resealable plastic bag and each individual tab is in its own tiny plastic pouch. This is convenient for my use-case, since they’d otherwise get destroyed backpacking, but mildly annoying that they generate so much non-recyclable waste.

OVERALL

All in all, I’m on the fence about these. My little test showed me I should never rely on them as my only way of cleaning a multi-day old protein shake that’s been baking in my car, gym bag, or in the case of my test, my patio. But I also never let my BlenderBottles sit that long without cleaning. Perhaps they’d be fine if I used them within 24 hrs of dirtying a bottle, but if I’m on the go and don’t have time to clean by hand (or don’t have access to a sink while camping/backpacking), a couple of rinses with water works fine and I don’t need to remember to pack the EcoBrites when I’m on the go.

I also can’t imagine relying on these as my only bottle-cleaning method. Sooner or later I’d want to throw them in the dishwasher!

And then there’s the mild annoyance of the trash they generate.

I try not to let my bottles go too long between washing, and these babies make it so much easier! Love how simple it is to just fill the bottle with hot water and throw in a tablet and let it do it’s thing!
